Exploring How We Create Meaning with Tarot

Waite-Trinick Tarot Classes

week 1, week 2, week 3, week 4, week 5

This series of five classes meets Tuesday evenings 7-9 PM Eastern time (-5 GMT) January 3-31, 2012 as a teleconference. Each class will offer discussions of the Waite-Trinick Tarot as published by Tali Goodwin and Marcus Katz in Abiding in the Sanctuary: The Waite-Trinick Tarot, A Christian Mystical Tarot (1917-1923). Because of copyright restrictions the images will not be reproduced on this website though related images will be offered when relevant.

The classes will be chock full of references and suggested readings. Participants will be asked to research images and certain questions and provide a written summary of their results to be published as part of the class notes. These assignments are voluntary but will contribute greatly to the depth and breath of the themes we will be able to introduce.

One may see digital images of the Waite-Trinick Tarot from the British Museum Research website where one can download for one's own personal study all 43 images.

For access to study material see annotated study Guide. Note material will be added throughout the 5 weeks.

The guide includes pdf books and research papers ready to consult to research issues. More will be added as the class proceeds.

Plan for Sessions

Plan of Sessions. We are doing about 5 cards a week, each card has approximately 3 versions each as published in Abiding in the Sanctuary. This means we have less than ½ hour to discuss each card and its variants which is very little time.

In order to make best use of our teleconference time together each participant should be prepared to discuss the images. Have your observations, insights, questions and notes written down ahead of time to share if and when appropriate.

At the end of each session we will offer research topics relevant to next week’s images and follow questions. This preparation research I am asking you make as brief write ups that will become part of the notes for the class. These assignments will be focused on topics and images and ideas suggested by these cards. Participation in the research is voluntary and not necessary for participation in the teleconference.

List of Images and the links to sessions we will be discussing them.

Christian Symbols and Liturgical Vestments were compiled from the internet skim through them for ideas about W-T images.

"The initiations are many and so are the schools of thought, but those which are true schools and those which are high orders issue from one root. Est una sola res,[There is one thing only] and those whose heart of contemplation is fixed upon this one thing may differ widely but can never be far apart. Personally, I do not believe- and this has the ring of a commonplace- that if they came to understand one another they would be found to differ widely. I know not what systems of the eons may intervene between that which is imperishable within us and the union wherein the universe will, in fine, repose at the centre. But I know that the great systems, ay, even the great processes- of the times that are gone, as of those which now encompass us- do not pass away, because that which was from the beginning, is now and ever shall be- is one motive, one aspiration, one term of thought remaining, as if in the stillness of an everlasting present. We really understand one another, and our collective aspirations are united, world without end." ---A. E. Waite The Hermetic and Rosicrucian Mystery by Arthur Edward Waite
